Whither Lilac?

Sunday we heard plaintive meowing coming from the lilac hedge. We ignored it for a while, but that tone is “designed” to be unignorable, so we investigated. There was a more-than-kitten, less-than-cat hiding in the hedge. It did not want to be approached.

We put some food and water in the hedge for it. While we debated what to do, the sun set, dropping the temperature, and the wind came up. I felt bad for the poor thing so I brought out a blanket and put it near the untouched food. We decided we would make a concerted effort to capture it in morning (when we could see it), if it was still there. Lilac seemed a logical name.

The next morning, both the food and Lilac were gone. I refilled both water and food bowls (and picked a bag full of trash out the hedge). We heard no meows, yesterday. Today, the food is untouched.

I hope Lilac is OK, somewhere, but I have a feeling it was circle-of-life-ed. The blanket, food, and water are still there. I’ll keep an eye and ear out, but I doubt we’ll see Lilac, again.
