Titles
It occurs to me that I need both series and book titles.
I have only one criterion: Book Title + Series Title + book number MUST be readable.
Browsing through my Kindle for examples…
Jack of All: LitRPG, Isekai, Survival Adventure (Book 1) fails in two ways. If one is looking at multiple books, the distinguishing and arguably most import part – the book number – is truncated off the end in many displays. The genre keywords take up title space.
The Matter Destructor : Book VI (LITRPG/SURVIVAL/EPIC PROGRESSION) mostly works. There is no book title. Just a series title and the book number. The should-not-be-in-title genre keywords are at the end so if anything gets truncated, it’s useless and redundant.
A Soldier’s Life: Book 4: The Hounds and Fire From the Sky: Book 15: Heat work. If the book title gets long, the series and book number are still readable and sort-by-name puts the entire series in one group.
Children of the Enaisi (Sword’s Edge Chronicles Book 2) and A Tangled Road to Justice (Paladins of Distant Suns Book 1) fail just for being too long. Each piece is fine on its own, but all together the book number is truncated. In the same format, Breakaway (Expeditionary Force Book 12) works because the entire series has single-word book titles. Taroniah & Kyron Unite (Ithria Book 15) works (barely) because the series name is so short. Removing the redundant word “book” from all of them would help.
Legend of the Arch Magus: Forbidden Region, Legend of the Arch Magus: Revelation, and Legend of the Arch Magus: Curse of Agares fail for not even trying. In what order does one read those?
Freshmen (Wine of the Gods Series Book 50) is borderline failure. The book number is the most likely to be truncated. At the very least, “Series” needs to be ripped out. Several others in the series fail because they don’t have one word book titles.
Mates by Design: A Fated Mates Werewolf Shifter novella (Blessed Curse Book 1) fails on two levels. First, it’s too long with the number at the end. Second, is it in the “Fate Mates” series or the “Blessed Curse” series? There’s too much going on for a title.
Pack Rising might make a good series title. What Were You Doing When the World Ended? would be a great title for book one, but it’s far too long. Getting What You Asked For also works, but is still a bit lengthy. Perhaps, You Asked For It.
I don’t hate that. You Asked For It (Pack Rising 1) and Foundations (Pack Rising 2) seem OK. I can’t title book three until I have some idea what’s going to happen in it. The “sort together” issue is not nothing, especially with 1,000 books in my Kindle. Perhaps, Pack Rising1: You Asked For It and Pack Rising 2: Foundations. I can has tentative titles!
