Predator in the Garden

It’s not my first rodeo. The plastic containers on the left don’t have anything planted in them. They are there to give the cat something to knock over.

The rightmost two columns are both peppers (Thai Hot and Poblano). I’m hoping they just have a longer germination time. The seed is quite old (at least three years), but so were the rest of them.

There is one lonely sprout on the left. All eight of those cells are rosemary. I have the worst luck getting rosemary to grow. We’ll see if any more sprout, but I won’t be surprised if none do. Not sure if it will go outside or just get a spot on the kitchen window sill, next to the parsley, thyme, and oregano. Oh! I didn’t start any basil. Task for later today.

From left: Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, Rain barrel

The strawberries and raspberries overwintered just fine, yay! I’m not sure if the blueberries made it. They were not happy in the fall. They don’t look completely dead, but I don’t see leaves, yet. Instead of dumping Spa Down on them, I need to get some proper soil acidification stuff. It’s also still a mystery whether or not the grapes survived.

I had to replace the dripline, already. The buried one sank with the soil compression and was ripped apart on the garden bed boundaries. I’m not going to bury the new one.

It’s so tempting to start planting outside. I’ve put in peas (off the left edge of the picture), but they’re super-hardy. I did an experiment in Denver. I planted a few every week starting from the first week in April. They survive snow. Everything else is going to wait until the Mother’s Day standard. It’s been very warm (and not wet enough), but it is still South Dakota.

Sleipnir – the lawn roomba (the roomba roomba is Fenrir)- is already running. I’m not entirely pleased with it. It’s terrible at getting back on its charging station and it doesn’t get close to anything. I blame lawyers for the latter – can’t have the mower blades too close to the edge of the housing, some idiot may stick their fingers into it and sue. The picture looks reasonable because I ran the regular lawn mower around the beds. The gap is a bit wide for weed-whacking.

I’m trying to avoid watering, but that space needs a bit. So did a spot in the back. Most of the grass has turned verdant green, already (without watering). I’m not going to level and overseed this year. The grass only went in last October. I’ll give it more time to settle. It will get a dose of weed-and-feed, mainly because the front yard needs it and as long as I’m buying the stuff, I might as well use it up so it’s not just one more thing hanging out in the garage.
