The Laird asked about getting my baking pictures out of my phone. They travel 1,984 miles (3,192 km) to get across the room.
The easiest way to transfer the files from my phone to my computer is via Google Drive (it’s not as if Microsoft is a better company). Starlink satellites orbit at about 342 miles (550 km). The data has to go up and back, so 684 miles (1100 km). The nearest Google Data Center is in Papillion, NE (270 miles/435 km). The next is Henderson, NV (1074 miles/1,728 km). Splitting the difference is 650 miles (1046 km). That also has a there-and-back doubling. So 342+342+650+650 is 1,984 miles (3,192 km).
The Starlink downlink is in Chicago, IL. At least I assume it is because all my browsers think I’m in Chicago – and I have no desire to enlighten them. The math is not accurate.
However, it’s about 3,192 millimeters (10^-3 m) between my phone and my computer, not 3,192 kilometers (10^3 m). Six orders of magnitude because the computer and phone don’t talk well over a wire. Even if latency were an issue, it would still take longer to deal with the wire. Sigh.
