Do Game Developers Get Royalties?

There was some concern for the developers of Concord, a game I’d never heard of, when it crashed and burned in two weeks. Kotaku, another thing I’d never heard of, published some of it. I don’t get it.

While it is nice to work on successful projects, developers get paid as-they-go (i.e. they’re employees). Why do they care if it succeeds or fails? They’ve already been paid. If they are the artsy type, it went live (however briefly) so they have portfolio content. If they are coders, they got experience on a (relatively) cutting edge platform (PS5) for their resume.

I asked the question over there. This post is mostly to remind me to check back.
