I don’t give much money to charities because so much is staff salary, but that’s not what this is about. There is some charity out there that collects the pop-tops from aluminum cans – those pop-tops that were purposefully designed to not come off.
Apparently, they, whomever “they” are, get $50 per pound for them.
I hate this stupid shit. I’d rather just give them the $50 than futz with my garbage. Wondering if this were simply a “cantankerous Mark” reaction or real, I did the math.
11 tops weigh 0.10oz (I weighed them). x10 for 110 for an ounce. x16 for 1,760 a pound. It takes about 10 seconds to remove one from the can, which would be 17,600 seconds for a pound. /60 for 293.3 minutes. /60 for 4.88 hours. That’s $10.25 for an hour of work, which is around $17.00 pre-tax.
It’s now objective: My time is worth more than futzing with my garbage – not to mention the collection and delivery.
I haven’t been time-tracking the time spent writing. I wonder what the hourly rate on that will turn out to be…
