Hamburger Buns There’s always a story, isn’t there? I’ve been baking bread for a decade, now. Doing it well consistently since we moved down from the Mile High city. One would think that hamburger buns would have come up, already. In fact, they have, with middling success because I have nothing in which to riseContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LVIII”

Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LVII
Halloween Cupcakes These were super experimental. I’ve never made cupcakes before. They were also hardware store style baking: Repeated trips to the store were necessary. I have two muffin pans at a dozen muffins each. I thought one and half layers of a layer cake would fill both pans, hence the four-batch mis en place.Continue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LVII”
Waffles
The Laird has been not-so-subtly wanting a waffle iron. I don’t want one. It’s the sort of thing that one buys, uses three times, then stores in a cupboard for decades. We don’t have the storage space we once had. Well, what should turn up in the unending “let’s unpack another box this weekend” task?Continue reading “Waffles”

Blackberry Apple Pie Another one from the Four and Twenty Blackbirds book. I again used the combo crust. I cut it down to a 2/3rds recipe, which really wasn’t enough. The bottom crust is very thin. I also par/blind baked it, which the recipe does not call for – but fruit pies are runny. TheContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LVI”
Does Meatloaf Count?
Despite being baked, I don’t think meatloaf qualifies for the Learning 2 Bake from Scratch series. I have a lot of ground beef in the freezer, a bread heel every week, and we buy eggs by the flat. So why not more meatloaf? I’ve never been a big fan and it seems kind of silly:Continue reading “Does Meatloaf Count?”

Peanut Butter Cookies We bought some white chocolate peanut butter at the farmer’s market (from Deb’s Downhome Delights [not the best link, but the only one I found]). It’s very tasty. I thought to myself, I thought, “I bet this would make good cookies.” Then I got sidetracked by the Paprika Peach Pie, twice. IContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LV”

Paprika Peach Pie – Take 2 Much improved. It could still be better. The taste went from peach to tasty peach. I cannot taste the paprika (or all-spice or ginger), but it’s clear there are spices in this one. The filling change was just as I described: Mix the peaches in salt and sugar, letContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LIV”
Costing Bread
While at the Farmer’s Market last weekend (to buy peaches for another pie attempt), I noticed that a loaf of bread was $7. Earlier I had noticed that grocery store bread was also expensive. I wondered to myself, I wondered, “what does my bread cost?” I put most of the bread ingredients on the shoppingContinue reading “Costing Bread”

Paprika Peach Pie It’s getting difficult to keep track of the Roman Numerals; they don’t sensibly sort in the File Explorer. I think 53 is right. I also noticed that I did 50 as XLX. Oh well. No recipe this time. It’s from The Four & Twenty Blackbird’s Pie cookbook. I see no reason notContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LIII”

Not Oreos I had two events (dance party and Toastmasters) to bring something to and I’d promised my dance instructor cookies, next time I made them. Hence, cookies. I like not-Oreos. Any resemblance to a trademarked cookie is purely coincidental. Because I make them softer than the cookie that shall not be named, I wasContinue reading “Learning 2 Bake from Scratch – LII”
