Good news: Reading on the Kindle is causing me to see things I haven’t noticed before.
Bad news: I can’t read my book on my Kindle without being at the computer. I keep noticing problems. If I just keep reading, they’ll never get fixed. I need to fix them as I find them, which means I need to read my Kindle at my desk. That’s annoying.
Most common issue: Every fricken line of dialog is attributed. The fix is easy: Delete the “he said”s. There are just so many of them.
Number two is probably the dropped word. It’s usually a short one. “be”, “he”, “is” etc… that should be between two other words but is mysteriously missing.
Number three is probably using action as quote attribution: Character does. “Then talks.” Chapter 14 was rife with that. It’s fine, occasionally. In a conversation, it’s maddening.
I’m finding other stuff, but those stand out as common. I’m on chapter 15, which is the last chapter in what I sent to alpha readers.
Rejected image: I like this one – but what’s holding up the stick? One side (end? edge?) of the bit of the axe is buried in the ground; I’d be willing to ignore that.
BTW: Enough of the Marcy images turned out fine that I’m not doing more until I’m sure I’m writing the book. A “men don’t think like women” post at According to Hoyt has made me leery of writing a teenage girl protagonist. Going for the link, there is now a second one. I probably will not do it well. Maybe I can find someone to structurally edit it.
