Do I Want an “And So?” Category?

Edward Zitron, whoever he is, hates Facebook. The end of the article:

This is the petty king of the tech industry — a multi-billionaire that can never be fired, that has billions of people on websites that he has deliberately engineered to boost engagement rather than provide a service.

I won’t mince words. Mark Zuckerberg is a scumbag that hurts his users for profit. The entire tech industry should know who he is, the culture he has created, and the ways in which he has brutalized his company into finding ways to increase numbers at the cost of his users’ happiness.

And so?

He, himself, gives comparable examples of other companies/industries doing the same thing (e.g. Broadcast TV). When was the phrase “If it’s free, you are the product, not the customer” coined?  In 1973 the artists Richard Serra and Carlota Fay Schoolman broadcast a short video titled “Television Delivers People”

So we have a 50 year old insight masquerading as news about Facebook. If you hate being the product, don’t use the service, be it Google (who reads my emails), Broadcast TV (that still exists?), or Facebook (never joined; don’t want an audit trail of my life).

  1. Yeah, I read the article yesterday and the first thing that struck me was the guy really hates FascistBook. I used it for about a decade, but it kept getting worse and worse to use so I quit using it. I tried a few others but they were just as unwieldy. Personally I think Zuckerberg is chasing the wrong metrics to be able to keep the company afloat, but I’m not the expert. Who cares if they end up driving people away?
