My First Jelly

While I wait in hunger for the bread to cool, it occurred to me that I haven’t posted since before my computer died (power supply bit it). So, here we are.

Much like the peas, this is not for self-sufficiency. I mainly want to cover up a chain-link fence, so why not grape vines?

That’s 12oz of jelly from 2lbs of grapes, which was the entire harvest. This is only their second year, though. I expect the vines will grow.

It’s a bit too gooey. It strings like melted cheese. But, it’s jelly. My first attempt was in Denver and I made grape syrup, which is not very useful.

It tastes very grapey, which is appropriate. It’s not necessarily “better” than store bought, but it’s certainly at least as good.

The process is simpler than I thought. I had the Kitchen-Aide food mill attachment out and ready to go (for the first time in ages). Turns out, you just mash them in a pan while bringing them to a boil then strain it through a towel. Hint: The towel will be permanently stained purple.
