I’ve been trying to figure out how to protect Earth from the greater multiverse. We’re the n00bs. There are civilizations out there that have been doing this for literal billions of years.
I’ve written the post about “multiverses are really big” and “there is no such thing as ‘no one cares'” because in population of numbers so big they don’t have names, a tiny, tiny percentage that cares is millions of beings.
The typical way this problem is handled – if it comes up at all – is that Earth (and usually our entire universe) is quarantined for a while while we get going. That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t overcome a _billion_ year headstart.
What if I add HFY and write an Earth System, Fuck Yeah! story?
Everything _seems_ the same. Same system. Same levels. Same skills. Same attributes. However, because humans started out so tough (Earth being a deathworld and all), the baseline is much higher and the numbers more effective.
I’m already sliding down this path with the werewolf Shift skill pushing them into rank/grade changes, early. Sometimes one should just ride the slippery slope. It could be just werewolves or it could be everyone.
Of course, our intrepid werewolves and/or Earthlings don’t know this, yet.
An easy way to get the idea into our heroes’ minds is through high-level off-world monsters that they demolish. So far, all the monsters have been mutated Earth life (griffins are totally “Earth life”).
If that’s the case with the multiverse, it would also hold true in the universe.
We’re about to find out that monsters spawn: Luke is caging a fluffle of jackalope as a breakfast buffet and they’re going to respawn every night.
That means that Antares sandworms, Tau Ceti raptors, Wolf 359 targs, etc… are all possible. Eventually, people will figure that humans are fighting well above their weight class.
None of this (other than the breakfast buffet) is going to happen in book one. Right now, I don’t see it as part of book two, either. Although some initial, foreshadowing encounters seem appropriate. This is a book three or four thing.
Keep in mind, if no one reads me, this is irrelevant because book five is Earth being destroyed by one of those old civilizations. I was planning on outlining two completely different book fives. With this idea, both versions could be the same (some multiversal power attacks Earth) up until the end – or at least the second half.
In the “I have legions of adoring fans” plan, Earth kicks ass. In the “no one loves me” plan, Earth gets blown up.
Not sure if I’m going to write today. My mouth doesn’t exactly hurt, but it is very distracting.
Rejected image: I like this one! But he’s got that orange blush on his cheeks again and his axe is just a stick. I’d be willing to try fixing the cheek issue, but adding an axe head is probably beyond me; certainly beyond what I want to attempt.
Only a couple left. I think I’ll run off another thousand. If nothing else, they make good images for the blog posts.
