Mad Geniuses

I’ve started reading it, again, now that I’m writing, again.

From a post yesterday (day before?): Reading like it’s 1999.

Kindle Unlimited’s monthly author fund has settled in the $50–67 million range; the first eight months of 2026 alone paid out more than half a billion dollars to authors. In August 2026 the per-page rate reached $0.005170—the highest tracked figure in recent data—while the fund itself remained near record levels at $66 million.

I need to type this out.

  • Round to $0.005 per page
  • Two pages is $0.01.
  • 20 pages is $0.10
  • 200 pages is $1.00

Assuming that brief moment of “over 600 pages!” was real (latest upload has no page count at all), that’s over $3.00 per KU full read.

That’s not going to buy caviar for my cat, but it seems reasonable to me. Adam vs The Apocalypse (book 1) had 280 star ratings when I looked it up the other day; it still does (I didn’t bookmark the URL).

That’s probably around $1,000. I’d be entirely thrilled with that.

To be honest, I’d be more thrilled with 280 star ratings averaging 4.6. This is more of a “can I do it?” vanity project than an attempt to make money, but I’m not going to turn it down.

It’s been out just over four months. I think discoverability is the thing, there. I wouldn’t be surprised if I _eventually_ reach 280 star ratings. However, I’d much prefer it happened before second-tier storage moves to orbit.

That would definitely put the “Earth Survives!” branch of the plan in motion. There’s my tag line: Save the Earth, Rate my Book!

Four months after book one publishes is the decision point for how book five ends. I’m still feeling my way toward success (Earth survives)/failure (Earth is blown up) criteria. No reviews, no stars, no readers is failure and I blow up the planet. A couple/few reviews, 200 stars, and however many readers that implies (I’d guess closer to 400 than 200) and our intrepid werewolves save the world!

There is a lot of space between those two things. We shall see.

Finish book one, then start counting chickens.

BTW: Last night, when Chapter 27 became “Two Weeks“, I moved the old chapter 27 (Cattle Drive) which still had “Chapter 26” in the text, to chapter 28. It’s not going to be. 29 at best; probably 30. It started as chapter 24 and keeps getting pushed forward.

BTW2: There is something about a change in format. Proofreading the Kindle version is definitely worth doing. I’ve made minor changes, but they’re improvements.
